Welcome to the Wisconsin Chapter of GPA

GPA is a nationwide non-profit, volunteer-supported organization dedicated to the placement of ex-racing Greyhounds in ideal home situations. We invite you to learn about Greyhounds as pets, see the Greyhounds that are available for adoption, and a little about us, and our adoption policies.

Dairyland Greyhound Park - Closed

Kennel Dogs

On December 31, 2009 Dairyland Greyhound Park closed its doors and greyhound racing ended in Wisconsin. It brought the end of an era, but not the end for greyhound adoption. There are still plenty of greyhounds who are retiring and need our help to find adoptive homes.

The closing was announced in early November, and at that time, local adoption organizations sprung to action by working together to move as many pet dogs as possible out of the facility ahead of time. Its estimated that approximately 200 dogs were placed into adoption before the end of December. Adoption groups across the Midwest worked very hard to coordinate the movement of dogs locally and throughout the neighboring states.

Big Q

Media coverage of the closing was incredible. Inquiries flooded the track and local groups with requests for information about the dogs, the closing, and how to adopt. The outpouring of concern and offers of assistance was greatly appreciated and resulted in an unprecedented surge in applications. With cooperative efforts of the regional adoption groups, the track management, kennel operators and racing owners, more than 400 greyhounds were placed into adoption and are now enjoying the comforts of retirement life with their families.

Betty and Zoey

With no local source of retired greyhounds to draw from, GPA-WI has refocused efforts to help other areas overflowing with available dogs. So far this year, greyhounds from Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Kansas have come into our program. We anticipate receiving dogs from Iowa once their seasonal track opens. As we continue our goal of placing retired racing greyhounds in loving homes, we hope you will continue to show your support for our organization by participating in our events, donating to our fundraising efforts and promoting greyhound adoption wherever possible.

GPA-Wisconsin would like to sincerely thank all of our volunteers, supporters and colleagues in greyhound adoption. Your efforts helped the Dairyland closing go smoothly and we are proud to be on the same team to complete our parallel mission. We expect to unite many more families with these loving companions in the years ahead.
