Surgery got pushed back AGAIN until tomorrow morning!
The doc said that he is really surprised that it is taking this long to die off... he blocked off Monday too just in case he wants to wait a few more days. We were also instructed no more Neosporin - which makes for a very itchy doggy! Surprisingly (to me), it is not infected or even that red around the stitches. That was my biggest concern - well one of them.
She's doing good... we've just gotten into the habit of really babying her. As in, I'll bring the water dish over to her bed because I don't think she's drinking enough. Just to keep up the princess act, she will literally take two laps, then turn her head and stick her snout in the air!
We put all sorts of delectable goodies on her kibble because she HAS to eat and have a full tummy with the medication that she's on.
Anything that she does out of the ordinary causes me to worry non-stop. This morning she didn't wake up at her usual time - preferring to sleep in I guess! Jon and I were up walking around and she didn't even get up I keep thinking that she is sad, depressed, hurt or in pain.
I REALLY hope the surgery happens tomorrow! _________________

I think Morgan is right! McGrady was never a diva or a princess before her accident... Now? Oh ya, she's the biggest princess ever. And we cater to her, so I guess we brought it on ourselves, sort of.
I'm sure Gabby is soaking up the extra attention and TLC - I don't think its wrong to pamper her a bit, but just beware she may get used to that type of treatment.
Hugs to your girl from us. We'll cross our fingers that recovery continues at a steady pace. _________________ The Paulus Printing Gang

haha... that's my thinking too
Normally if she doesn't eat after it sits in her dish for 30 minutes, the food gets taken away and then she waits until the next meal.
One thing that I learned from the vet - V8 juice. We drizzle it over her kibble and (she knows what she is doing) then she waits about 10 minutes for it to soak in, then she eats it right up. As a last "please please eat" resort, it's kibble, V8 topped with a scoop of cottage cheese and few slivers of hard boiled egg _________________

Have you tried feeding her just canned dog food? I've used that with several foster dogs who had trouble eating and/or maintaining weight.
I know your struggles all too well. McGrady was hand fed for weeks after she came home from the hospital - cooked chicken breast primarily - but a variety of other things as well. We fed her every two hours, but she had lost over 25 pounds so getting weight on her was critical.
As long as Gabby is eating at least a meal a day, and drinking her water, I'm sure she's going to be fine. You can also try ice cubes, or reduced sodium chicken broth, pedialyte or gatorade if you think she needs more liquids in her diet. You're doing a great job with her! Hang in there - things will keep improving day by day! _________________ The Paulus Printing Gang

Wow, you have been working hard for your Gabby girl. Kudos to you two, I can relate!
When Roxie came home from the ER Vet earlier this year she was on about 8 different antibiotics (no joke) given at all different times of the day. To add to the fun this former chow-hound had no interest in food....but we had to keep food in her stomach so she wouldn't get an upset stomach from the meds and throw them up. Finally out of desperation to get her to eat a little something even when she didn't feel like it I let her stay laying down, head on the floor and would lift up her cheek flap and shove a little wet food in there. (kind of like chipmunk cheeks) Roxie then had the option of trying to figure out how to spit the food out or just go ahead and swallow it. Even with constant washing of hands my fingers smelled like dog food the whole time we did this. Bleah.. And as smart as mommy is, she didn't think to put a towel on the floor under Roxie's head until she had to clean wet food off the carpet a few times.
Ahh, memories... ...but all was completely worth it to see Roxie healthy and happy again. She's now perfectly content to eat from her food dish again and likely would not appreciate me trying to stuff her cheeks with kibble. _________________ Jason & Theresa with GH Roxie , Mandy kitty (aka Poop Monster), and Isabella the African Grey.

Awww... that makes me feel better! At least she has an ok appetite. She has thrown up a few times which is a new experience for us - she has never thrown up in the 1.5 years we've had her
The doctor doesn't seem too concerned about it - she is acting fine and eats eventually. The meds probably have a lot to do with it.
SHE IS IN SURGERY RIGHT NOW!!! I just dropped her off this morning and they decided she was good to go. I am such a nervous Nelly - biting my fingernails and looking at the clock. They are supposed to call me around 12:30 - 1:00 with an update and I should be able to take her home between 3:30 and 5:00. They did bloodwork this morning because of the thowing up paired with the meds and Dr. Beth said that she would call if something was funny. She hasn't called yet, so I hope that means everything is ok and the Lou is in surgery.
I'll keep you updated! _________________

Second surgery = success (for now!)
We just got back home... they took out the flap and stitched her up. Dr. Beth is amazing! I think she looks great, nothing like before
She's drugged up, but the difference between after this surgery and after the first surgery is unbelievable. She's definitely not herself, but she isn't literally screaming in pain. She is obviously so sore though.
Here's some pictures:
She is oozing quite a bit at the seams, but the doctor said that is normal. It's pretty gross, you can literally see the distinct two sections of skin between the stitches. They kept the stitches kind of loose because of where it is on her back / shoulder blades.
Nightmare is almost over! _________________
