Friday when I came home from work about 2:30pm Tyra had left a large present for me down in the basement on the carpet. I know it was her as Kit still won't come down the stairs. I was only gone about six hours that day, which is not much different than any other day. So I just kind of chalked it up to confusion.
Saturday was a long day at the Petco Adoption Weekend M&G and nothing out of the ordinary.
All was business as usual until about 6am this morning. We let Tyra and Kit out for their morning business, and then they either come right back in, or sunbath for a while. At any rate, I have ridded that back yard of any dangerous plant life (stupid lily of the valley), but I do know that she does have a hankering for grass and weeds occassionaly. So about 15 minutes after she came in, she gave one or two of those coughs where you know something may be following, but nothing did. About 15 minutes after that, she did vomit, and frankly, it just looked like regular old dog vomit. Nothing very special in it. So as I was cleaning that up, she started again. This time it looked more like thick foamy snot (sorry). There were a few piles of that, and then a massive one hanging from her mouth that I had to wipe off.
After that she went and laid down for a bit, but then after a little while she was up and doing what she normally does...following me around everywhere and cuddleing on the couch. She didn't take any treats for a while or eat much of her breakfast. She did drink a little water. All seemed semi normal.
So Charlyne and I had to go to a family function for a few hours from about 1-6. When we got home all was normal...two hyper black greyhounds jump us! Charlyne and I along with the ladies went out in the back yard where we played keep the toy away from the humans, and then Kit and Tyra did their daily 550 yards (Kit always wins).
So that was that. We let them settle down before dinner time, then their regular feeding. All gone in both bowls.
I was upstairs on the couch and no one was in the basement, but Tyra kept walking down there. Thinking something was up, I followed her down and right in the same spot as Friday, she left me another nice present.....
And now....she seems to be doing the one or two coughing thing again.
Any thoughts or am I being overly sensitive? _________________ Chris & Charlyne (Wifey), Megan (Small Human)-Greyhounds: Kit (JJ Rocky Road) & Tyra (Flying Tyra)-Protectors of the home (ie, the cats)-Frank, Big Kittie, Talula |

Is it diarrhea or regular poo? I wouldn't worry as much about the vomit, as she probably just ate something icky. However, if it's diarrhea and vomit, it could be something.
Try the bland diet mentioned above for a few days and see if that helps. _________________ Jennifer, Emma, & Lexi

My question was going to be similar to Jen's. Was the poop downstairs normal? If so, maybe the two things aren't even connected. She could be pooping down there because she's not fully housetrained or doesn't know how to let you know she's needs to go out, and the vomiting is from an upset stomach.
My recommendations would be:
1) feed rice and eggs for a day or two to help her digestive system
2) monitor closely anytime she is out to make sure she's not eating something she's not suppose to - ie no unsupervised time in the yard
3) monitor her closely inside the house so she doesn't have the opportunity to poop in a place that inappropriate (ie downstairs).
Keep us posted - if Tyra seems out of sorts, lethargic, continues to vomit or there is blood in the throw up, or can't seem to settle down / is irritated, I would recommend taking her to the vet. _________________ The Paulus Printing Gang

Friday's mess was pretty runny, but in one spot. Sunday's was a little more firm, but still not solid.
Charlyne or I have been going out in the yard with her, but she is always chomping at some sort of vegitation....we've removed just about everything, with the exception of some hostas (sp?) and there are some weeds under the pine and maple trees. I think she may still be a little confused about the whole back yard thing still. Kit is pretty good about doing her business in one corner and then having the whole rest of the yard to run like a crazy dog and then lounge in the sun. I think that confuses Tyra a bit...she's like, "wait, are we supposed to do our business out here or play out here?"
After yesterday morning's bout with the vomitting and then wanting to lay down for a while, she seems to be prancing around just fine... As far as settling down...that only happens when we aren't moving around the house She likes to follow us around and check everything out
So we will try to give her a little rice and eggs this evening to calm her stomach (It will be a nice treat for Kit as well). Should this supplement her regular dinner or replace it?
Thanks for your help! _________________ Chris & Charlyne (Wifey), Megan (Small Human)-Greyhounds: Kit (JJ Rocky Road) & Tyra (Flying Tyra)-Protectors of the home (ie, the cats)-Frank, Big Kittie, Talula |

If you think her digestive system is really upset, I'd replace the rice and eggs for her full meal of food - so no kibble or canned, just rice and eggs. I generally cook up 4 cups of white rice (not brown) and add 4 eggs while its still hot so the eggs get cooked. Then feed maybe 1-1/2 to 2 cups a meal. If adding to kibble as you wean them back onto regular diet, maybe mix half rice and half kibble to equal the total amount you want to feed.
The rice and eggs works wonders alone for firming up poo and being easy to digest.
The other thing you can do to keep her from eating stuff outside is put her muzzle on. Hopefully you can get a system figured out that will work for you and Tyra. Keep us posted. _________________ The Paulus Printing Gang

Hi all - I was just going to say that both of my forever greys and fosters pooped in the basement. I believe it was a part of the pups thinking the basement was not part of the home or "crate" in their mind.
When I gated the entrance to the basement (Good thinking Sherlock!) we never had another problem as they wouldn't (remember if they couldn't - it may be digestive issues . . . ) go in their own "crate".
Good luck and best wishes!
PS - Even Bing, who was in homes before, could get his sneaky butt behind the furnace in the basement and POOP - sometimes because the weather wasn't to his liking I am sure... Not just disturbing - but quite a challenge to get to it to clean it up! lol _________________ Kiki, Dave, Bing & Cami (and precious kitties at the bridge, Ed, Eddie Jr, and Jimmie) |

It looks like whatever Tyra's issues were have passed. No more accidents and no more vomitting. I think the reason she may have had the accident in the basement is becuase we carried Kit down there (still doing stair training after 7 months) and she got a little nervous and had a little excitement accident, so maybe Tyra thought it was okay to do her business there as well....at any rate...looks like she is all good now....
As we speak she is at the vet for her tooth extractions Somewhere between 3-5 of them and hopefully she doesn't have any other issues with her mouth... and hopefully her recovery goes well!
Thanks again, Ellen.... _________________ Chris & Charlyne (Wifey), Megan (Small Human)-Greyhounds: Kit (JJ Rocky Road) & Tyra (Flying Tyra)-Protectors of the home (ie, the cats)-Frank, Big Kittie, Talula |

Glad to hear things are back to normal. Sending gentle hugs for Tyra after today's dental extractions. Those are never fun. Don't be surprised if she's out of it tonight, and has some yukky bloody drool. Poor Quaker's whole face swelled up, but she had 8 teeth removed, so hopefully its a bit easier on Tyra! _________________ The Paulus Printing Gang

Oh yea....she's out. She got home and tried to follow me around a bit but I could see she is just so out of it so I just sat on the couch until she settled down. Kit is being a very good friend and is just laying on her bed next to her.
She had five offending chompers in the back pulled out and as you said, the swelling is bad. She looks more like a Bassett hound and less like a Greyhound right now. I feel bad for her but I guess it's just a matter of time and she'll be right as rain.
Charlyne said that today, Kit wouldn't play outside or anything, because her pal wasn't there
Thanks again for all your help Ellen. _________________ Chris & Charlyne (Wifey), Megan (Small Human)-Greyhounds: Kit (JJ Rocky Road) & Tyra (Flying Tyra)-Protectors of the home (ie, the cats)-Frank, Big Kittie, Talula |

Awwwh Poor Tyra! I'm sure in a few days she'll be feeling better and getting back to normal. I think it took Quaker about 3-4 days to really bounce back, but she is older than Tyra too. The good thing is, before it took Quaker like 1/2 an hour to eat a chew treat that took Sugar and McG two minutes to eat. Now that her bad teeth are gone, she is still a little slower than the other girls, but not far behind in chomping down those treats.
Feel better Tyra! Hugs from our pack! _________________ The Paulus Printing Gang
